Open Kerminy

A shared workplace for research, creation, and experimentation

Open Kerminy is a place for work residencies, located at the Château de Kerminy in Brittany.
It is a self-managed, non-commercial, non-profit space designed to give artists, researchers, and practitioners the time they need to work, research, experiment, and reflect — together or simply side by side.

A place to take time

Open offers work stays ranging from a few days to several weeks, as well as occasional daytime use. There is no application process, no project evaluation, and no obligation to produce work or present outcomes.

The place is deliberately simple, flexible, and minimally prescriptive. Each person organizes their own time, priorities, and methods within a collective framework based on autonomy, responsibility, and care for others.

A shared, lived-in space

Housed in an old château, Open Kerminy is a place where uses naturally intersect.
Conversations move from the kitchen to workspaces, ideas circulate between the library, living rooms, workshops, and surrounding areas.

The site includes:

  • bedrooms and shared living spaces,

  • several shared workspaces,

  • areas dedicated to sound, bodily, theoretical, or making practices,

  • an immediate natural environment, as well as art and agro-ecological plots, conducive both to retreat and to exchange.

A diversity of practices

Open welcomes a wide range of approaches: visual arts, music, sound art, performance, writing, philosophy, bodily practices, artistic research, environmental sciences, free and open-source technologies, and social and collective practices.

Residencies take place autonomously, but rarely in isolation. Encounters, informal discussions, knowledge-sharing, or collaborations often emerge without being programmed.

Self-organization and shared responsibility

Open operates without salaried staff (administration, accounting, technical management, maintenance, cleaning, etc.), without public subsidies, without sponsorship. The place exists thanks to the direct involvement of those who use it.

This implies:

  • care for shared spaces,

  • participation in collective tasks,

  • the ability to adapt to the framework and to other presences.

The place makes the residents’ work possible, and the residents make the existence of the place possible.

A connected place

Open is part of a broader ecosystem in Kerminy and across South Cornouaille, alongside other structures, projects, and communities of research and creation. Even if the presence of a constituted community is never guaranteed at any given moment, the place is crossed year-round by multiple uses, ongoing projects, and lasting ties between people who have stayed here.

Coming to work at Open

Open is a private place, reserved for adult members who are professionals or semi-professionals, and autonomous in their practice.

To come, simply submit a clear request including:

  • possible dates or periods,

  • number of people,

  • type of stay.

There is no need to send a project proposal or portfolio.
